The other day, I visited a local retail store to check out their clearance section. Why? To see if I could find anything that was discounted–I mean REALLY discounted–that I could purchase and resell either on Amazon or Craigslist. I chose this particular retail store because they sold toys in the back of the store but wasn’t considered a popular store to shop for toys.
I arrived at the store at 8:00 a.m., right when they opened. I walked around the toy section that had many toys on sale for 30-40% off, but when I look for things to resell, I look for big discounts like at least 75-80% off. Truthfully, 30-40% off the original price won’t be a big enough discount for a reseller to make any profit.
However, even if something is on sale for 80%, it doesn’t mean it will be a good product to resell. For instance, I found one of the Twilight board games sitting on a clearance shelf at a huge discount. I got a little excited when I saw what I could purchase it for so I scanned the bar code with my free Profit Bandit app for Android and found out that it wasn’t that popular of a game anymore (maybe it never was–I don’t know). This app lets you know what items are selling for on Amazon and if you could make a profit selling it. It’s an amazing app and I highly recommend it if you are already a reseller or you want to get into the reselling game.
I almost left the store after scanning several items on the clearance shelves, but I did find a highly sought after Mega Bloks toy and another popular game that were both highly discounted. After checking Profit Bandit, I added them to my cart. I didn’t think I would find anything else though on this particular day. Some days are better than others. Then I saw a really big box on the bottom shelf. I checked it out and it happened to be a really cool dollhouse with which I was familiar. It was marked down from $129.99 to $25.99. I checked the box out to make sure it hadn’t been opened before. Everything looked good. I knew it would sell on Craigslist so I bought it along with the other items. I was even able to use a 15% coupon!
I listed the dollhouse on Craigslist for $65 and I had a buyer within a day; not bad for a few minutes of “work!” I listed the games on Amazon and they all sold. In fact, the Mega Bloks game sold within hours of listing it!
So what’s the moral of this story? There are opportunities to make money all around us. In fact, when you get in that mindset, it can almost drive you crazy! When I walk into a store, I feel like I’ve left money on the table if I don’t have time to shop around for deals. If you’re into treasure hunting like me, then you might like the book, “Barcode Booty: How I found $2 million of ‘junk’ on eBay and Amazon, And you can, too, using your phone,” by Steve Weber. If you have a Kindle and an Amazon Prime membership, you can read the book for free, otherwise, you can buy the book new on Amazon for around $12 or used for about $10.

Get $20 Amazon Gift Cards Again & Again
by Melissa Miller on March 19, 2012
I just discovered a pretty easy way to get $20 Amazon gift cards again and again. SocialMoms.com (don’t worry single people or dads, you can visit too!) is a website where you sign up and engage in commenting, tweeting, entering contests, or answering questions in exchange for points that you can redeem for Amazon gift cards.
I was able to receive over 1,200 points the other day with SocialMoms.com by entering some contests, commenting on some posts and then tweeting the posts. Today, I received an offer of 500 points for doing the same. You see, SocialMoms will send out a weekly email with a “roundup” of all the things you can do to earn maximum points. I did everything in the first email and it took me about 15 minutes (I haven’t done anything yet from the email I just received today). Plus, maybe, just maybe, I’ll win some of those contests!
The only negative (well, there might be two), is that you only have the $20 Amazon gift card to choose from when you hit 4,000 points, or a $40 PayPal payment when you reach 8,000 points. In addition, you can choose $10 off Lip Therapy by Own Products for 550 points. But that’s it–just those three items.
I’m still new to SocialMoms so I don’t yet know all the ways to score the points. However, I read somewhere on the website that they cap the number of monthly points you can earn. I don’t see that written anywhere from the owners of the site, so I don’t know if that’s true or not. I also saw where I can add a widget to my website that would allow people to get points for “Liking” my Facebook Page. That’s great if users of SocialMoms can get points for Liking Facebook pages, but there’s no real way to find the websites that have this widget unless I’m missing something.
The way I figure it is if I can reach 4,000 points so I can redeem them for the $20 Amazon gift card and spend less than 1 hour in total achieving this goal, then I think it’s worth my time. What about you? If you think it’s worth it, then go ahead and give SocialMoms.com a try. You’ll receive 250 points just for signing up!
