The Secret Power Of Writing a Personal Mission Statement

The Power of Writing Things Down

The Power of Writing Things Down

I bought a new day planner last week. My old one was too cumbersome and I found that I didn’t write my daily tasks in it as much as I should because it never left my desk. As I was cleaning out the old one and entering information into the more slimmer and portable new planner, I found something interesting that I had written in the back of the old planner.

The old planner was a FranklinCovey “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” planner. I believe I paid extra to get all the bells and whistles that came with these Planning Pages. It included a 26-page supplement that refreshes or teaches you about each of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had read this book and was looking forward to being able to apply the 7 Habits into my daily life.

Just to review, the foundation of the 7 Habits are:

  1. Be Proactive®
  2. Begin with the End in Mind®
  3. Put First Things First®
  4. Think Win-Win®
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood®
  6. Synergize®
  7. Sharpen the Saw®

In the back of that 7 Habits Planner, are activities that are supposed to be filled out to help you meet your goals and objectives in both your personal and professional life. Feeling ambitious last January, as most people do at the beginning of a new year, I completed most of the activities.

Activity 6 included questions that were supposed to help you gain further insight into your life, and to help you develop your Personal Mission Statement. These are the questions:

  1. What have been some of my greatest moments of happiness and fulfillment?
  2. What activities do I most enjoy and find most fulgilling in my professional life?
  3. What are the activities of most worth in my personal life?
  4. What talents and capacities do I have or want to have?
  5. How can I contribute to the world?

After I answered these questions, I have to honestly say, I never went back to review my answers–until two days ago.  It had been a whole year since I had answered those questions.  Interestingly enough, what I wrote in my oversized FranklinCovey Planner a year ago, has come true. These were my answers:

1) What have been some of my greatest moments of happiness and fulfillment?

“Being imaginative or creative in an idea and having it come to fruition.”

2) What activities do I most enjoy and find most fulfilling in my professional life?

“Writing, learning something new and interesting and being able to pass on that new knowledge.”

3) What are the activities of most worth in my personal life?

“Teaching someone something new that benefits them in some way.”

4) What talents and capacities do I have or want to have?

“I am positive, humorous, resourceful, well-rounded, knowledgeable, a quick learner, patient, and have the ability to motivate others.”

5) How can I contribute to the world?

“To motivate and inspire those that need it.  I am very resourceful and can help people make connections with their professional goals.”

I didn’t blog a year ago.  In fact, I had no intention of ever starting a blog.  However, writing on MyMochaMoney.com has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever accomplished in both my professional and personal life.  I took an online course that covered everything from registering your domain name to marketing your finished blog.  I felt like I was in school again but loved every minute of it and it was completely worth my time and effort.  I’m having more fun with my blog than I ever thought I would!

I hope that my blog helps, motivates, and teaches others that they can earn money working in a REAL job from home.  At the very least, I hope it provides enough information to get readers thinking about all the possibilities that exist for earning and saving more money. If my blog accomplishes this, then I’m truly fulfilling my Personal Mission Statement.

What’s in store for 2009?  More of the same.  I plan to expand on my Personal Mission Statement and write down–in my smaller FranklinCovey Day Planner–more goals of what I want to achieve this year. I plan on continuing to research ways for more people to be able to work from home, and I’d like to expand the categories on my blog to include more on personal finance and investing for people who work from home in their own small business.

I know it’s not magic that makes your written words come true, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to believe!

FranklinCovey has a great Mission Statement Builder. It’s free and only takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. Here is their web address: http://franklincovey.com/tc/resources/view/msb.
