Now You Can Sell Hand Painted Items On eBay Even If You Can’t Paint!

by Melissa on January 2, 2009

I can’t think of a better place than eBay to sell your hand painted items.  What’s that?  You can’t paint?  And if you tried to paint your five-year old would laugh at you?  No worries!  There’s a way to learn to paint fast and start selling your new (and fabulous looking) hand painted items on eBay for profit, and have a REAL job from homeif that’s what you desire.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Learn to paint!  This is no joke.  You’re going to need to learn to paint and learn to paint fast.  I can’t think of any better method to learn to paint than Donna Dewberry’s One Stroke Method. I know because I’ve read seven of her books and learned her techniques.  I was so taken by her techniques and how easy they were, I made a point of going to one of her book signings so I could meet her.

Donna has a lot of books with VERY easy techniques that will make you look like an accomplished decorative painter in no time.  I suggest getting one of her technique books first like Donna Dewberry’s Essential One-Stroke Painting Reference, or Donna Dewberry’s Complete Book of One-Stroke Painting or if you like a specific topic like flowers (which sell really well on eBay especially hand painted pink roses) then I suggest getting Painting Fabulous Flowers with Donna Dewberry or Flowers A to Z with Donna Dewberry.

After learning some of Donna Dewberry’s simple techniques, and getting some basic supplies like her suggested brushes and paints, I went out and found some things I could paint using the techniques I learned in the books.  I was then able to sell those items on eBay for a nice profit.  If you can find interesting things in your house to paint, or inexpensive thrift shop items, then the only cost to you is your time it takes to paint the item.  Once you learn Donna’s techniques and practice them, you’ll be able to churn out project after project in no time!  Here are a few of the items I sold on eBay:

Not only did I use my new painting techniques to sell items on eBay, I also painted items to give away as gifts, and as centerpieces for my son’s Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.  My hand painted pot centerpieces with flowers were given to a teacher at each table as a prize.  The pictures are below.  The painted pots were for the luncheon, and the tall tin vase was given as a gift.  People love receiving hand painted gifts!  These types of gifts are so thoughtful and much appreciated.  I’ve seen my pots in the teacher’s classrooms (with new flowers of course) a couple of years after they received them!

Hand Painted Gifts Using Donna Dewberry's One Stroke Method

Once you have your One Stroke technique perfected, you’ll need to know what you can paint that will sell on eBay if that’s what you want to do with your new talent.  I put together a list below of hand painted items that sell well on eBay.  Like I mentioned before, you can find inexpensive items to paint at thrift stores.  Also, flea markets and believe it or not….OPT (other people’s trash).  In addition, you can get items for free if you go to Freecycle.org and join a group in your area.  Craigslist is also a good way to find items people are giving away for free or inexpensively.  In addition, you can look up garage sales in your area through Craigslist or your local newspaper.

HAND PAINTED ITEMS THAT SELL WELL ON EBAY

  • cake tins
  • bread boxes
  • canisters
  • old windows
  • mailboxes
  • knobs
  • vases
  • placques
  • slates
  • tables
  • chairs
  • specialty drinking glasses (wine glasses, margarita glasses, etc.)
  • picture frames
  • wood signs
  • stools
  • coat racks
  • piggy banks
  • shelves
  • wall clocks
  • birdhouses
  • pots
  • memo boards
  • Christmas ornaments
  • trash cans
  • wooden magnets
  • recipe boxes
  • glassware (i.e. salt & paper shakers)
  • teapots
  • napkin rings
  • sewing boxes & so much more!

WANT TO DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH?

If you want to conduct your own research on eBay, go to eBay.com, and click on “Advanced Search” and put in the keywords, “hand painted” or “handpainted” or “hp” and the item you’re looking for like chair, pot, recipe box, etc. Then check the box “Completed Listings.”  That way you’ll not only see how others have painted these items, but what has sold.  For instance, if items that are vintage and “shabby” and painted with pink roses (my favorite) seem to sell well, then you may want to paint pink roses on vintage, shabby items too!  You’ll need an eBay account to do an Advanced Search.  If you don’t have one, it’s free and you can get your eBay account here.  You’re going to need an eBay account anyway if you plan on selling your items on eBay!

Well that should get you started.  Once you have perfected the One Stroke technique, you’ll find how easy it is to experiment and come up with your own style of painting.  One of my mother’s friends learned the Donna Dewberry One Stroke technique some time ago.  I saw a card that she painted in watercolor that she gave my mother.  It was so beautiful that my mother framed it and put it on a prominent table in her family room.  If you saw how beautifully decorated my mother’s house is (like a showroom), you would know how much of an honor that would be!

Have fun with your painting and I hope you not only make a nice profit from it, but feel a sense of pride from your new talent.  There’s nothing better than the feeling of accomplishment!
