Google Alerts To Find Best Deals And Money Saving Tips

by Melissa on December 7, 2008

There’s a really cool tool called Google Alerts. If you don’t know about it, you should check it out. First of all it’s free, and second, everyone has a need for this tool; either for business or for personal use. I just started using Google Alerts. It’s like a personal assistant, scouting out news stories about any topic you choose. It’s a way to keep informed when someone blogs or writes about the search term you create in Google Alerts. I’m interested in finding any new information on the topics of “How to save money,” “Making money from home,” and “How to find the best deals” so I’m using this tool to help me keep informed.

HOW DOES GOOGLE ALERTS WORK?

Google Alerts allows you to create an “alert” (actually, you can create up to 1,000 alerts) on whatever search term you choose. Then you choose where you would like your search to be conducted. There are currently six types of search areas:

  • News
  • Web
  • Blogs
  • Comprehensive
  • Video
  • Groups

Once you set up your alert, or term that you want searched, you decide how often you want your results delivered to you via email: Once-a-day, As-it-happens, or Once-a-week.

Some cool uses of Google Alerts include:

  • monitoring a developing news story
  • knowing when an item goes on sale
  • finding out when someone mentions your company, blog or name
  • keeping current on a competitor or industry
  • getting the latest on a celebrity or event
  • keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams

A few of my search terms are:

  • Money saving tips
  • Making money tips
  • Making money from home
  • Guitar Hero World Tour sale (I can’t find this for under $189!)

As I’m writing this post, I thought I would check my email to see if any Google Alerts were in my inbox. I actually received an email for each of these search terms, and found some great info I can use for a future post on “making money from home.”

Wow, Thanks for posting this information. I’ve never heard of Google Alerts. Just in time for last minute Christmas shopping. It was fast and easy to sign up.
