Yesterday I skipped my own tradition. I didn’t shop on Black Friday. I don’t know if it was the huge quantities of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and my own homemade apple pie devoured the night before, or the multiple glasses of Chardonnay that kept me home this year. But whatever the reason that kept me from the crowds and the long lines, all was not lost. As I sipped my own brewed Starbucks coffee in my pajamas at a reasonable hour on Black Friday morning, I found my best deals online at Toys R Us.
As I have said before on previous posts, I often check SlickDeals to see what the Hot Deals forum folks have found in the way of great deals. This is a must during the Holiday season. In addition, since I’m a deal and savings kind of gal, I subscribe to company websites such as Toys R Us, Barnes & Noble, Gap, Banana Republic and other sites that are of interest to me. Then I get emails announcing their upcoming sales as well as emails with coupons. Yes, I get a lot of emails but if you use a separate email address in which to have these sale and coupon emails directed, then it’s not so bad and you won’t miss out on a money-saving opportunity!
So what was my best Toys R Us deal that I got online yesterday? It started at 6:00 a.m. and was only available at their website. If you purchased $50 worth of merchandise AND paid with PayPal, you received $25 off! This was good for me because the item I wanted was $69.99.
As I placed the item in my Toys R Us “shopping basket” on toysrus.com, I was informed that if I purchased $100 of qualifying Mattel merchandise, I would receive a $50 pre-paid Visa card from Mattel. Since I only needed to purchase $30.01 more (my first item was a Mattel item), to get my $50 pre-paid Visa card, AND I was already receiving the $25 discount, I went ahead and picked out another item at $34.99 that I know will please a little one in my house.
The first time I tried to order, PayPal must have been quite busy because a message asked me to try again later. I was annoyed but finally got through and placed my order.
Let’s recap…My two items retailed for $104.98. I received $25 off immediately because I paid with PayPal, and will receive a $50 pre-paid Visa gift card from Mattel because I bought $100 worth of qualifying Mattel merchandise. Also, which I forgot to mention before–the shipping was free.
So in the end, I will have paid $29.98 (plus tax) for two gifts that combined retailed for over $100 that will make someone very happy on Christmas morning. In addition, I was able to stay within my budget.
But the best part? Not getting up to an alarm clock on Black Friday morning to fight the crowds and stand in line.
The worst part? Missing out on my Starbucks’ tall, nonfat, no-whip mocha fighting the Black Friday crowds and standing in line.

It definitely looks like some of the best deals can be found online, and a bit safer than some of the crowds this year. Toys R Us sounds like they have a good thing going for their customers.
I’m an employee of one of the top electronics retailers and I wasn’t aware that many of the best deals during Black Friday and Cyber Monday (something else new to me) take place online. I guess its a way for retailers to make extra revenue but keep Black Friday lines to a controllable size. Due to recent closings and downsizing at Toys R Us stores, I’m sure that giving customers a great deal on the biggest selling day of the year helps keep the retailer’s head “above water” so to speak.
What a great deal!! I’m thinking about doing all my holiday shopping online this year (i know i’m running out of time) but a story like that is very encouraging!! I’ve always thought of Toys R’ Us as being on the more expensive end of things, but when you take into account all the coupons and discounts it really is worth it! Thanks for the advice.
