How I Plan To Profit Locally From My Online Skills

by Melissa Miller on January 23, 2010

When I started this blog over a year ago, I didn’t know where it would take me.  In fact, I bet if you ask a lot of bloggers who have made it through the blogging honeymoon phase, they would say the same thing about their own blogging experience.

I did know that I wanted to share my experiences with saving money, finding deals, and my personal favorite–making money from home with REAL work at home opportunities.  But that’s all I knew at the time.  I thought it would be fun and that it would feed my creative side.  Back then, I never believed it would be anything else.

Fast forward a year later and I can’t believe everything I’ve learned over the past year.  It’s so true about doing something little each day to achieve a goal, and how little actions add up over time.  I’ve learned so much about blogging, and internet marketing that I can now take those skills and do something else with them if I so desire.

So that’s what I’ve been thinking about lately.  I’ve actually become quite good at ranking on Google’s first page for specific keywords.  I’ve been doing this by making short videos.  I either make them using PowerPoint, or Jing (I have the $15 paid version of Jing so I can post my videos directly from Jing to YouTube in lightening spped).  I then post them to some video sharing sites as well as social bookmarking sites.  And guess what?  I sometimes can rank on Google’s first page within twenty-four hours!

I starting thinking that this online skill might be something that others would pay for, especially local businesses.  How many restaurants are in your local area?  Or plumbers, or roofers?  You get the picture.  Wouldn’t they be interested in getting on the first page of Google for specific keywords that relate to their business?

So I then started thinking how I would approach local businesses, and who I would approach first.  Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I was going to do this.  I didn’t feel like putting together a bunch of mailers, or going door-to-door to offer my services.  So I started thinking about a recent experience  I had at a restaurant.

My family and I had recently visited a local restaurant that had amazing burgers.  We couldn’t stop talking about those burgers for days after we had eaten them.  We all agreed that we haven’t had burgers that good in ages, and we didn’t know of any other place nearby other than this particular restaurant that served such great burgers.

That’s when the light bulb went off.  I decided to make a short video about this restaurant’s burgers, choose some keywords to target, and submit the video to a bunch of targeted video sharing and social bookmarking sites.

My research showed me that I could most likely rank on the first page of Google for the keyword phrase, “best burgers in Chester County.”  My idea was to make the video, rank on the first page of Google, then contact the restaurant to show them what I had done.  I believed that once they saw the video on the first page of Google, they would perhaps, want to work with me in targeting more keyword phrases that would land their restaurant on Google’s first page .

Here’s the video I made:

So what has happened since I made this video and submitted it to the targeted video sharing and social bookmarking sites?  I’m happy to report that I did indeed get my video to rank on Google’s first page.  Not once, but three times!  At the time I am writing this post, I hold the third, fourth and fifth positions on Google’s first page for the keyword phrase, “best burgers in Chester County.”  I was able to achieve this in less than twenty-four hours!  I was pretty pumped to say the least.  Here is a screen shot with two of the spots highlighted:

I did contact the restaurant but not directly.  I used their “Contact Us” form on their website to let them know what I had done.  This is what I said:

Hi there!

My family and I had dinner at the America Bar & Grill a couple of weeks ago and we all had the burgers.  By far, they are the best burgers in Chester County!

I was so impressed with your burgers, I made a video touting them and your restaurant.  Go check it out.  Look up “best burgers in Chester County” on Google.  My simple video about your burgers and the America Bar & Grill landed on the first page of Google in less than 24 hours.  In fact, it occupies three out of the top ten spots!

When I’m not enjoying your burgers (and your nachos), I do internet marketing for my own blog, “MyMochaMoney.com.”

My expertise is getting web pages ranked in Google with the right keywords, and simple videos (plus attracting subscribers that you can market to on an ongoing basis).

Nowadays it takes more than just posting videos to YouTube to attract attention to your product or service.

Care to chat?  You do have great nachos, you know!  Maybe all of Chester County needs to know that they’re as good as your burgers!

I plan to follow up with the restaurant’s manager or owner to see if they have seen the video and to find out if there is an opportunity for us to work together.  But in the meantime, I’m going to post an ad on Craigslist to see if I can attract some local businesses who are looking for that extra online marketing help.  After all, I now have a video I can show them that backs up what I’m claiming I can do.

Who knows, I may even make another free video for another business.  Come to think of it, I do know a really great landscaper!
