The Power Of A Goal & A Partner

by Melissa on November 30, 2009

Last January, my husband and I decided to take on Tony Horton’s P90X Workout Program.  Have you heard of it?  Chances are if you watch late night television, or early morning weekend television, you probably have seen the infomercial for this program.  Let me tell you–your abs will ache just watching the commercial!

We figured if we could last the entire 90 days of working out six days a week, it would take us right up to our planned Arizona family vacation in early April.  How awesome we would feel if we could begin our vacation and the beginning of spring, looking and feeling great.

Fast-forward 90 days to April 2009 and I’m happy to report that we made it.  In fact, the day before our vacation was our 90th–and last–day on the Program. Our original assumptions were correct; we were stronger–both mentally and physically–leaner, and happier.  When you can survive a workout system like P90X, how can you not be downright ecstatic?!

MommaMuscles1I credit my finishing this intense workout program to my husband.  If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have completed it.  We kept each other motivated every day.  He worked out in the early morning around 4:30 a.m., and I would work out after I got the kids off to school.  We would exchange workout war stories at dinner.

Fast forward again to July 2009.  A friend and running partner of mine was entering the Philadelphia Marathon for the second time.  She wanted me to run it with her this time around.  I originally said “no,” but that I would be her training partner.

My friend had a training program she found online. All we had to do was follow it.  It was a proven training method because other runners, including my friend, had proven that you can run a marathon successfully by following the program.

marathonfinishAfter training with my friend for over a month, I decided to enter the marathon myself (and raised money for a charity called Best Buddies). We followed the training program for over three months and ran the Philadelphia Marathon on November 22, 2009.  We finished the Marathon in four hours and nine minutes!  I had only ever run at the most, six miles at a time, yet I just finished a 26.2 mile race!

My friend and I ran the entire race together, and crossed the finish line together (that’s me on the right–yes, I am smiling!).  I can’t describe to you (unless you’ve run a marathon yourself) the feeling of crossing the finish line after running that insane distance.  All those months training had finally paid off.

However, I never would have entered the marathon if it wasn’t for my friend.  At mile 18, we high-fived, told each other that we “rock,” and thanked each other for the partnership we had formed to train and run the race together.  Let me tell you, if you’ve never run a marathon, the last five miles are sheer hell.  If you don’t have a partner these last five miles to keep you going, then your chances of running the last five miles instead of walking, go significantly down.

These two events in my life have proven to me that the power of setting a goal AND partnering with someone else that shares your goal or a similar goal, is huge.  When you can do that and succeed, you feel like there is nothing else that you can’t do.  So that leads me to my next challenge.

I’ve been working on this blog consistently for over a year now.  That alone is an accomplishment because so many people start blogs and then abandon them.  If I’m not writing on this blog, I’m researching stories, or traffic-generating ideas.  I’m finding ways to further monetize my blog, or to educate myself more on SEO and Web 2.0 techniques.  All of my hard work has paid off.  Every month, my blog grows, and I earn more money from it.  This is as a result of a goal I set for myself over a year ago.  However, I have a new goal that I feel cannot be attained without help.

I know I can only get so far without help from someone that is successful online in a way that I want to be successful.  I would like to earn a full time income from my blog and not just “Mocha Money.”  I need a partner or partners that can teach me what I don’t know.

What I do know, is that I’m a good student.  I’ve proven that I can set a goal and achieve it with the help from someone that has a similar goal.  I’ve gone it alone on my blog for over a year and achieved the first step.  Now I’m looking for a teacher.  I may have to pay for this education, but I am confident that I will make that money back many times over.

There is so much power behind a goal and a partner.  Just remember, your partner needs to be a strong person that is motivated to succeed just as much as you are.

A goal and a partner: That’s all you need to get it done!
