So I just checked on my eBay auctions that I listed recently, and was pleasantly surprised that the broken Nintendo DS Lite that I listed and spoke about in my post, “Make Money Now Selling Broken Electronics & More,” has a few bids on it.  At this moment, it’s up to $9 and the auction doesn’t close until Sunday evening giving me three more days for the bid to climb higher.  I’m very excited to know that my broken stuff is worth something to someone else and won’t be collecting any more dust on my son’s already very messy desk!  However, if selling broken stuff on eBay isn’t for you, and you’re looking to sell new, desirable items that you can buy at a discount, and sell for a nice profit, then hit your nearest outlet center!

THE OUTLET CENTER ATTRACTION

Do you live near an outlet center?  Maybe you don’t live that close to one, but can you get to one within a couple of hours?  If you’re a serious eBay seller, or if you want to be, it’s definitely worth the trip.

Within the last year and a half, a new outlet center opened up about 20 minutes from my home.  Before this one opened up, I traveled about 50 minutes to another outlet center–it’s bigger, but obviously not as convenient as the new center!

I used to sell more on eBay but since I started this blog, I slowed down with my listings a bit.  However, I’m starting to sell a little more now because I realize that if I utilize my About Me page the right way on eBay, I can drive more traffic to this blog.  I love writing on this blog and sharing deals that I find, savings ideas, and REAL work from home opportunities with my readers.   More traffice=more readers=more people I can help with the information that I post.

Definitely a topic for another blog post, but that’s my reason for getting back into selling on eBay.

There are outlet centers all over the country.  Many of the stores within outlet centers are designer brand stores such as Polo, Coach, Lucky Brands, Kate Spade, etc.  The outlet stores carry items at a discount separate from its’ retail store for many reasons.  The merchandise can be off-season, discontinued, or last year’s styles, just to name a few.

I went to my nearby outlet center the other day and bought a bunch of things to sell on eBay.  I especially like the Coach store.  When I walked by the store the other day, I saw a few “Clearance” signs through the window.  Since it was the day after Memorial Day, I knew the sales would be good.  This turned out to be true, and I left with four items I can sell on eBay for a nice profit.  My method consists of looking for purses, wallets or clutches marked down by 50% off the retail price, then marked down an additional 40-50% off THAT price.  I usually can’t go wrong with this method.  My biggest challenge, however, is getting out the door without buying myself a purse!

At my nearest outlet center, there’s a Neiman Marcus Last Call store.  This is considered one of Neiman Marcus’ discount centers.  I can find designer clothing, purses and home accessories at this store for very decent prices.  However, I always look for items that are already discounted off the outlet price and then discounted off that price.  Combined with a “20% off the entire store” sale, I can make out pretty well!

Neiman Marcus Key Tassels

Neiman Marcus Key Tassels

During this past shopping trip, I found Key Tassels marked down to $4.99 plus an additional 20% off that price. They were originally $50 in the Neiman Marcus store.  They’re very elegant, and handy if you’re always losing your keys in your purse!  If for some reason they don’t sell on eBay, I always have nice teacher, hostess, or birthday gifts to give.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE AN OUTLET CENTER NEAR ME?

Don’t despair.  You can usually find similar deals in a major retail store, but you have to look a little harder.  Clearance racks at the back of the store, combined with storewide sales and/or coupons can offer great deals.  However, most large retail stores won’t allow you to use your coupons on designer brands.

WHAT SHOULD I BUY AT AN OUTLET CENTER TO RESELL ON EBAY?

Before visiting an outlet center, look online for the list of stores that are in the center.  For instance, there could be stores like Coach, Gap, Banana Republic, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn to name a few.  I would then go on eBay and do an advanced search (clicking on the Completed Listings tab) for the name of the store.  I would write down a few things that sold consistently (for instance, Train Shelves from Restoration Hardware seem to sell well) as well as the ending price.  I would then take my list to the outlet center and look for the same or similar items that were priced at least 50% off the completed auction price.

You can become an expert in a niche like workout clothes, designer jeans, or undergarments, or you could specialize in just one store like Ann Taylor or Gap.  Or, you could offer many products from many different stores; it’s up to you.  Whatever you decide to sell on eBay, your inventory from outlet centers is virtually endless.  Plus, outlet stores are always getting new inventory, and if you combine the outlet prices with store coupons (always check online for outlet center coupons before you visit), your shopping trip should prove to be very profitable!

I think your advice to shop at outlet stores for hot deals on items that one could make money selling on eBay with is excellent. I did this once at the North Face outlet store. They were closing many of their stores and so I bought about 50 very popular jackets at a steep discount. Also, some hats, backpacks, and accessories. Then I sold them on eBay at about 40% profit. I happened to enjoy the whole process, learned much about selling at eBay and made money at the same time.

I also did it with Burberry scarves, but instead of outlet stores I bought from a NY distributor directly. It was much more work and I didn’t make as much money. Wow, there are so many fakes and the learning curve was tricky for that fashion item. So, I moved on to another niche.

These experiences led into some eBay seller marketing tools I made such as ClickRiches. This allows eBay sellers to build their own marketplace for free so they can earn more money from affiliate income and drive more traffic to their eBay listings. The service is under development, but we’re taking signups meanwhile.

So, the next time you find a killer deal at an outlet store and you know you can make selling the items on eBay… then pull out that platinum credit card and max it out! Maybe you’ll earn flyer miles at the same time. I sure did! Also, sign up at ClickRiches to earn as an eBay affiliate AND a seller.
